For 40 years, the name IK Fish has been synonymous with fresh fish and seafood in Durham – and today, this much-loved family business is introducing a whole new generation of customers to the very best the sea has to offer.

The story began in 1986, when Ian Kennedy, then just 21 years old, launched IK Fish in Durham Market Hall. Fast-forward four decades and the business has come full circle, with Ian’s daughters, Honey and Lilly Kennedy, bringing IK Fish back into the family and continuing a tradition that has been part of Durham’s food scene for generations.

As central Durham’s fresh fishmonger, IK Fish offers a fantastic and ever-changing selection of fresh fish and seafood, delivered to the stall by Hodgson Fish, one of the North East’s leading independent fish merchants. Much of the produce comes directly from Hartlepool Fish Quay, helping bring the catch from the coast to the heart of Durham city centre.

What you’ll find on the counter naturally changes with availability and the catch, making every visit a little different. Whether you’re planning a traditional fish supper, looking for something special for dinner, or fancy being a little more adventurous with your seafood, it’s well worth seeing what’s fresh that day.
