You must bring a copy of your order confirmation email to the parade in order to collect your lantern reservation.

The Children’s Lantern Parade is one of the highlights of Durham Christmas Festival and, to many families, ‘the beginning’ of the Christmas season – it will take place on the afternoon of Sunday 7th December, 2025.
PLEASE NOTE, IN A CHANGE FROM PREVIOUS YEARS, THIS YEAR'S CHILDREN'S LANTERN PARADE IS ON THE SUNDAY.
Lanterns can be reserved in advance and collected on the day from the Market Place. Lanterns can be collected from 2pm on the day, from the stand at the bottom of the Market Place. Please ensure to bring your order confirmation email with you when you come to collect your lantern(s).
The parade leaves the Market Place at 3pm following the Chester-le-Street Salvation Army Band. The parade follows Saddler Street up to Palace Green, and arrives at Durham Cathedral for the St Nicholas Service at 3.30pm.
It is recommended that lanterns are suitable for children up to age 12, but all ages are welcome to participate in the parade and attend the St Nicholas Service.
