At times like these…

Are you finding that not a day goes by without a discussion about the rising cost of living?  People are genuinely having conversations along the lines of ‘how do you think you’ll cope this winter?’

We all know that costs are going up, we know why costs are going up, but what can we do?  There will inevitably be times when choosing the cheapest option available is the only thing to do, but can I present an alternative?

Why not buy just what you need?

The good thing about shopping with small independents is that, in many instances, you have the option to buy as much or as little as you want?  Just 3 chicken breasts from the butcher? That’s fine.  Only two baking potatoes needed for your evening meal? Not a problem. You’d like a few different cheeses, but just a little chunk of each … shop where it’s weighed out in front of you, only the amount you need.

Independent retailers are probably the most adaptable businesses on the high street, and they’re certainly keen to adapt to the customers’ needs right now.  So it’s well worth stopping and thinking, and maybe changing your shopping habits.

And, I’ve said it before, but shopping with independent local businesses is investing in your local community and keeping your city centre vibrant.

We’re pleased to watch Durham City Centre welcoming more and more independent businesses.  Each one is a real bonus to visitors and residents alike.  Each one is a reason to come into Durham and try something new.

I’m going to add to that not just to try the new independents … but we’d recommend revisiting the established independents at the same time.  I mentioned above, and I’ll say it again, if any business is fit to adapt it’s a small independent, a business run by someone passionate about what they sell or serve, and knowledgeable too.  Pop into an independent, and there’s a very good chance you’ll see something you’ve not noticed before, something new on the shelves.

Independents are brilliant at refreshing, renewing, and revitalising their business … and they’re great at saying thank you too, to everyone who comes and supports them.

Especially at times like these.
